Cantinho do Ceu (Slice of Heaven)

Today our delegation joined students and teachers of Colegio Santa Ursula in a visit to Cantinho do Ceu (Slice of Heaven), a home and hospital for people with severe physical and mental disabilities. This facility was founded by a very special woman named Sonia (pictured in the brown sweater just below) in the 1980's. Through a series of extraordinary circumstances, Sonia decided to adopt Elaine (below in the bed with pink bedding). She eventually discovered that she was called by God to care for disabled children and adults who might otherwise be abandoned and Cantinho do Ceu is the result. Today, this hospital serves 56 people and depends equally on government support an private donations.

As you can imagine, we were all deeply impacted by our visit. Even though we were nervous about knowing how to help the residents, we soon realized that there is a pervasive spirit of love throughout the home and that all we needed to do was smile, say hello and perhaps hug those who wanted our attention. The theology teachers from Colegio Santa Ursula brought a guitar and soon we were all enjoying a sing-along in the main lounge of the home. We were inspired by all those we met, especially Sonia, and we appreciated Colegio Santa Ursula sharing this experience of Serviam with us.
