Friday - A day to learn about Ausralian history and art

On Friday morning our delegation went to the Cobb & Co Museum in Toowoomba.  The Cobb and Co Museum is part of the Queensland Heritage Trails Network and is home of Australia's finest collection of horse-drawn vehicles. Additionally, the museum features an extensive collection of aboriginal artifacts and a visiting Leonardo Di Vinci exhibit.  Our students were treated to a curated tour of the entire museum which was very interesting.

Of course, it will be no surprise that our students were most excited about a lesson in boomerang throwing!  Despite the damp weather, we bravely tried to master this unique tool.  (Some were more successful than others 😊) At the end, the teachers proclaimed UA Dallas the very best high school group they had ever worked with and gifted Mrs. Clark with two boomerangs for her physics and engineering classes.

In the afternoon, the learning continued with a lesson on Aboriginal art and traditions from local artist, Kim Walmsley.  She explained how unique each tribe or "mob" views the creation of the earth.  All listened to a "dreamtime" story and then each person created her own art using the traditional materials of ochre and charcoal.  While our students worked, Kim created a very special art piece just for UA Dallas!  It shows Texas and Queensland coming together through our sisterhood.  We cannot wait to display it back at home!
