A reflection on Tuesday's excursion to Mont Saint-Michel from Mr. Poellot our France delegation::
This morning our delegation met at LycĂ©e Notre Dame and boarded a mini bus bound for Mont Saint-Michel. We were all bundled quite warmly as it was a nippy 36 degrees F this morning – that made for a rather brisk jaunt to the school! Seeing Mont Saint-Michel appear through the foggy distance a couple hours later was magical, and by the time our shuttle let us off at the end of the bridge across the tidal pool, the sun was beginning to shine through and highlight the magnificent abbey.
A mere 352 steps up the mont and we were inside the soaring space of the abbey church, which was the just the start of the treasures we would find as we descended back down inside the structures. We wound our way through numerous chapels, crypts, staircases and large halls designed for welcoming and feeding guests. We looked in awe at the large wheel used to haul supplies up from below – this was added when the abbey began housing prisoners in the early 1800’s. We ended the day exploring the village of shops and restaurants at the foot of the abbey before returning to Vannes so the students could return home with their host sisters. It was a day full of beauty and wonders!
