St. Ursula's School and Maropeng

Today the entire delegation attended morning devotions (as we have each day here at Brescia House) and then loaded onto the bus to head out to Krugersdorp to visit St. Ursula school. We were joyfully greeted by a cadre of boys (to the delight of our students) who promptly guided us through the halls to their assembly room. A lively discussion ensued between the students about who was the best, either LeBron James or Steph Curry. The adults marveled at how students can be so different and yet so similar! Our students once again presented to the entire high school - the St. Ursula students enjoyed the freshmen dance and the sharing of different American sayings and slang phrases the most, just like their peers at Brescia House. Following the presentation, gifts were given and received after which everyone adjourned to enjoy tea and snacks, followed by a tour of the school for the teachers and a tour of the grounds for the students. The building is beautiful, and we were saddened to see the damage to so many windows from the hail storm this past Monday. Send prayers that the insurance will cover all of the repairs!

 

Our group traveled next to Maropeng, the official visitor center of the Cradle of Humankind, to learn about why this region is called the Cradle of Humankind and to view the many artifacts which have been unearthed in the nearby caves. Students realized just how narrow and confined the path to the caves are – it is a wonder these latest bones were found at all. The exhibit was very intriguing and students left with a sense awe at the glory of life on our planet. Following our return to Brescia House, our students returned to their host families while the teachers attended a Spring Concert by 13 students who performed on the piano, violin, cello, and guitar. It was a very enjoyable conclusion to a very enjoyable day in South Africa!
